Citizens Police Academy

 

What Is the Citizens Police Academy?

The Citizen Police Academy is a free community education program intended to build lasting relationships between program participants and the Russell Township Police Department. The program will give participants an inside look at the values, philosophies, and operations of the Police Department. This program allows citizens and police officers to meet and interact in a positive and proactive setting to share ideas and information.

 

What Topics Are Covered?

Participants will have the opportunity to learn about many topics related to law enforcement. Topics will include Patrol Operations, Use of Force, Crime Scene Investigation, First Aid/CPR, Less Lethal/Non-Lethal, and Speciality Units (SWAT, UAS, Missing Persons, Accident Unit). Participants will also learn about how individuals become police officers and the on-going training that officers receive.

 

When Is the Academy?

The Citizen Police Academy runs for 8 weeks and classes are held once a week on Tuesday evenings for two hours. Classes will primarily convene at the Russell Township Community Building, and typically last from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM. Classes for the 2026 Session will begin August 25, 2026 and run through October 13, 2026.

 

Who Can Apply?

Any member of the Russell Township community who meets the following criteria:

  1. Applicants must be a current Russell Township resident in good standing.

  2. Applicants must be 18 years of age or older.

  3. No prior felony convictions or pending litigation.
